Looking ahead: Interim plans

Woodridge and Interim library locations

Woodridge Neighborhood Library will close for reconstruction in late summer 2013 and an interim library will open.

The current plan for the interim space is to open a 4,200-square-foot modular unit three blocks south of the library, on the northwest corner of 18th & Douglas streets NE.

The new Woodridge Library will open in 2015.

Take a look at the presentation planned for Monday’s community meeting at Woodridge Library by clicking on the first slide in the gallery above. (You can also download the full PowerPoint presentation.) On Jan. 7, the architecture team of Bing Thom Architects and Wienceck + Associates will present updates to the new library, and welcome your comments and suggestions.

The architecture team continues to refine the design in preparation for Monday’s meeting, so not all the images you see here will be the same shown at the community gathering.

As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts, and look forward to seeing you on Monday!

Date set for next community meeting

Street View from Rhode Island Avenue

This preliminary concept shows the overall shape of the building looking from Rhode Island Avenue. While the exterior material and color has not been decided, it will be a combination of solid and transparent surfaces.

The next community meeting is planned for Jan. 7 at 6 p.m., at Woodridge Neighborhood Library. (Note that this is a change from the original date of Dec. 3.)

Spread the word, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Design developments

Woodridge Library Presentation

The Library will present design concept developments for Woodridge Library to the public in early December and to the Commission of Fine Arts — which advises on and guides the architectural development of Washington — on Nov. 15. We will move forward on design decisions after feedback from those presentations.

Click on the picture or link above to access the presentation planned for the CFA, which includes ideas for finishes for the exterior of the building, on pages 45-49.

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

Plaza on Hamlin Street?

Since starting the journey toward a new Woodridge library, we’ve fielded comments and questions about creating a plaza on Hamlin Street.

Here’s what Hamlin Street, in front of the library, looks like now:

(You can click on the photos to get a larger view.)

And here’s a sketch of what it could look like, reformed as a plaza:

Proposed Hamlin Street Plaza

Now, don’t get too excited! We’re in early discussions on possibilities for that area, but no decisions have been made; we’re changing and revising based on viewers’ comments — even more reason to voice your thoughts!

What do you think of this version of a Hamlin Street plaza?
